Shahrbānū's Recompense: Muslim and Non-Muslim Antagonists and the Hero-Imam in Rabīʿ’s Alī nāma

This article explores the central antagonisms at work within Alī nāma of Rabīʿ, a fifth/eleventh-century Persian epic by Twelver Shīʿī poet narrating deeds ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib, in particular battles Camel and Ṣiffīn. It gives an analysis this poem its twin contexts imamology poetry, illustrating how these fields are variously drawn upon, combined challenged poem’s unique narrative imam, arguing that Rabīʿ cultivates his oft-cited opposition between Arabo-Islamic truth-telling Iranian/Zoroastrian deception as means navigating intra-Muslim sectarian dynamics. The argues against reductionist views poem, demonstrating hybrid nuance engagement with Sunnīs, Shīʿīs pre-Islamic past, well providing overview under-studied literature.
